Chapter 3 - The Stolen Child

I lunged forward and hit the lock button on the driver's side door again.

The electronic locks clicked immediately back into the open position.

Someone had remotely hacked my vehicle's security system.

I threw the car into reverse and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.

We sped backward out of the barn and spun around onto the dirt road.

I drove like a maniac until we finally reached the crowded hospital parking lot.

I grabbed both girls by their hands and ran directly into the emergency room lobby.

The bright fluorescent lights and the crowd of waiting patients made me feel slightly safer.

I rushed to the triage desk and demanded a doctor immediately.

A tall nurse in blue scrubs rushed over and knelt beside the girls.

She smiled warmly at Lily and offered her a colorful sticker.

The nurse told me she would take Lily into the back for an immediate scan while I filled out the paperwork.

I watched Lily walk through the double swinging doors with the kind woman.

Feeling a sudden wave of relief, I borrowed a landline phone from the reception desk.

I dialed my husband, Mark, to tell him where we were and what David had done.

Mark answered on the first ring, his voice filled with panic.

He demanded to know exactly where I was.

I told him I was at the county children's hospital.

Mark took a deep breath and told me to listen to him very carefully.

He said Sarah and David were currently standing in our living room with the police.

They had filed a formal report stating that I suffered a psychotic break and kidnapped their daughter.

I dropped the phone receiver, the plastic clattering loudly against the desk.

I spun around to look at the swinging doors where the nurse had taken Lily.

A real doctor walked out of the back hallway, looking confused.

He asked the receptionist who the woman in the blue scrubs was.

He said there was no one matching that description employed at this hospital.
