Chapter 9 - The Freezing Depths

I did not even think about the consequences as I watched Emily fall into the darkness.

I dove straight out of the speeding airplane, plunging headfirst into the freezing, turbulent lake.

The impact with the icy water knocked the breath completely out of my burning lungs.

I opened my eyes in the dark, stinging water, desperately searching for any sign of her pale hospital gown.

The cold was instantly paralyzing, turning my arms and legs into heavy blocks of lead.

I saw a faint white shape sinking slowly into the murky depths below me.

I kicked my legs furiously, forcing my body deeper into the crushing pressure of the lake.

I grabbed a fistful of the wet fabric and pulled Emily tightly against my chest.

I kicked upward with everything I had, breaking the surface and taking a massive, agonizing breath of air.

Emily was completely unresponsive, her face pale and her lips turning blue.

I treaded water desperately, trying to keep her heavy head above the crashing waves.

Suddenly, a blinding white light cut through the heavy rain and fog.

I looked up and saw the seaplane circling tightly back toward us.

Ryan had not taken off to escape; he had turned the plane around to finish the job.

The massive propellers roared deafeningly as he aimed the aircraft directly at our heads.

He intended to run us completely over and chop us to pieces in the water.

"Wake up, Emily, please wake up!" I screamed over the terrifying noise of the engines.

The plane was closing the distance incredibly fast, the sharp metal pontoons slicing through the black waves.

I took a deep breath, preparing to dive back under the water to try and dodge the deadly blades.

Just as the massive propeller was about to tear into us, a deafening siren echoed across the lake.

A massive, heavily armored police boat suddenly rammed violently into the side of the seaplane.

The violent impact shattered the plane's wing and sent Ryan crashing brutally through the cockpit window.
