Chapter 10 - The Vow Kept

The police boat's heavy searchlights illuminated the chaotic wreckage of the sinking seaplane.

Officers threw life rings into the water and quickly hauled Emily and me onto the warm metal deck.

Detective Miller was leaning against the railing, his head heavily bandaged but smiling proudly.

Paramedics immediately surrounded Emily, injecting her with adrenaline and pumping the freezing water from her lungs.

After ten agonizing seconds of silence, Emily suddenly coughed violently and opened her beautiful eyes.

I fell to my knees on the deck and completely broke down in tears of absolute relief.

The officers pulled a bruised and battered Ryan from the freezing water and immediately placed him in heavy iron shackles.

He screamed curses at everyone as they dragged him away to face a lifetime in federal prison.

An hour later, we were back at the private dock, wrapped in thick thermal blankets.

Lily ran through the flashing police lights and leaped directly into her mother's weak but loving arms.

Emily held her daughter so tightly that I knew she would never let her go again.

Vanessa survived her gunshot wound and was immediately arrested for conspiracy and attempted murder.

The nightmare was finally over, and our family was completely whole and safe once again.

I finally returned to my quiet apartment a few days later to get some much-needed sleep.

But as I unlocked my front door, I noticed a black envelope resting on the welcome mat.

Inside was a fresh photograph of Emily sleeping in her hospital bed from just an hour ago.

The back of the photo had one sentence written in dark red ink: "Ryan was only the beginning."
