Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The wedding was taking place at a beautiful country club outside Dallas.
My brother-in-law, Ryan, was marrying Vanessa only eight months after everyone had been told my sister Emily was dead.
Their daughter, Lily, stood beside the wedding party looking completely lost.
She was not smiling at all.
She kept staring at the empty chair where her mother should have been sitting.
Vanessa finally bent down and hissed at the little girl.
"Stop ruining my wedding with that pathetic face."
Lily’s small chin started trembling uncontrollably.
"I want my mommy."
Ryan heard her tiny, fragile voice.
His expression changed immediately from a joyful groom to something incredibly dark.
"Lily, enough of this right now."
"But Daddy, I really miss her."
The elegant guests turned toward them in confusion.
Vanessa looked completely embarrassed and furious.
Ryan grabbed Lily by the arm and whispered harshly into her ear.
"You are going to behave today."
Lily pulled away from his tight grip.
"I do not want her to be my new mommy!"
The entire reception went dead quiet.
Then Ryan slapped her across the cheek.
Lily stumbled backward and burst into agonizing tears.
"I want my mom!"
That was the exact moment I came crashing through the heavy ballroom doors.
I had been driving for hours because of one anonymous phone call Ryan never knew I received.
I saw my beautiful niece holding her red, swollen cheek.
Something inside my brain completely snapped.
I ran straight toward Ryan and kicked him hard enough to knock him right onto the polished dance floor.
People screamed in pure shock.
Vanessa shouted at the top of her lungs.
"Call security right now!"
I did not even look at her fake, panicked face.
I dropped to my knees and pulled Lily into my arms.
She was shaking so badly she could barely speak to me.
"Uncle James, Daddy says Mommy is gone forever."
I held her wet face gently in my hands.
"No, sweetheart."
Ryan suddenly went completely pale as he pushed himself up from the floor.
"James, do not say another word."
Lily stared at me through her endless tears.
I said the words Ryan had spent months making sure she never heard.
"Your mother is still alive."
Lily completely stopped crying.
Behind me, Vanessa dropped her crystal champagne glass onto the floor.
The sound of shattering glass echoed through the silent room.

But then Ryan wiped a drop of blood from his mouth and smiled.
"You are completely insane, James, and you are never seeing this child again."
