Chapter 7 - The Bloody Pier

Ryan froze completely, letting Emily slump heavily onto the wet wooden planks.
Vanessa walked slowly down the pier, her wedding dress now soaked and ruined by the heavy rain.
"Did you really think you could leave me behind to take the fall for this?" she screamed.
Ryan raised his hands in mock surrender, a sick smile spreading across his wet face.
"Vanessa, darling, I was just securing the primary asset."
"I was going to send a boat back for you once I reached international waters."
Vanessa laughed hysterically, her hands shaking as she kept the gun aimed at his chest.
"I want the digital keys to the offshore trust fund right now."
"Transfer the money to my phone, and you can fly away with your dead-weight wife."
I stayed completely hidden behind a stack of wooden shipping crates, watching the betrayal unfold.
Ryan slowly reached into his expensive jacket pocket, pretending to grab his phone.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Vanessa," he said softly.
Instead of a phone, he pulled out a small, silenced pistol with terrifying speed.
He fired a single shot before Vanessa could even pull her heavy trigger.
Vanessa gasped loudly, dropping her silver revolver as she fell backward onto the wet wood.
A dark pool of blood began to spread rapidly across her ruined white dress.
Ryan did not even look at her as he bent down to pick Emily back up.
I knew this was my absolute last chance to save my sister.
I sprinted out from behind the crates and tackled Ryan with every ounce of strength I had left.
We crashed violently onto the hard wooden pier, the gun flying out of his hand and into the dark lake.
I punched him ruthlessly in the jaw, hearing the satisfying crack of bone.
Ryan scrambled backward, blood pouring rapidly from his broken mouth.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black remote control.
"You lose again, James!" he laughed maniacally, pressing the red button.
A loud mechanical grinding noise suddenly echoed from the heavy boat lift suspended directly above the pier.

I looked up in pure horror and saw Lily bound and gagged inside the heavy steel basket.
The rusty cables snapped, sending the massive steel structure crashing down directly toward her.
