Chapter 8 - The Siege

The live security feed showed dozens of heavily armed men pouring out of the black SUVs.
They moved with terrifying military precision, completely surrounding the old warehouse in seconds.
"We need to get out of here right now," I yelled in sheer panic.
Arthur calmly reached inside his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a silver revolver.
"There is absolutely no way out of this building except through them," Arthur stated grimly.
He nodded to the massive man in the raincoat who had escorted us inside earlier.
The giant guard racked his shotgun loudly and kicked over a heavy metal barrel for cover.
"Stay behind the brick pillars and keep your heads completely down," Arthur ordered us.
The front doors of the warehouse suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash of splintering wood.
Heavy gunfire immediately erupted, filling the dark, dusty air with deadly lead and flying debris.
I tackled Grandma to the concrete floor and dragged her behind a thick support column.
Bullets ricocheted wildly off the brick walls, raining sharp dust down onto our heads.
Arthur fired his revolver with deadly accuracy, dropping two of the masked attackers instantly.
Through the chaotic smoke, I saw my father walk casually into the warehouse holding a megaphone.
"Give me the duffel bag and the original deed, and I will let the boy live!" my father shouted.
"Do not listen to a single word that lying snake says," Arthur yelled over the gunfire.
My mother suddenly stepped out from behind my father, looking completely terrified and soaked in rain.
"Please, Daniel, just give them the money before they kill us all," she begged hysterically.
I peaked around the brick column and saw the cartel leader pointing a rifle at my mother's head.
My father had entirely lost control of the violent monsters he had hired to do his dirty work.
"We have to surrender the cash to save her," I whispered desperately to Grandma.
Grandma Eleanor reached into her coat and pulled out the old envelope containing the house deed.
She looked at the precious document for a long moment and then ripped it completely in half.
"There is no negotiation with terrorists," Grandma declared with absolute finality.
She threw the torn pieces of paper out into the open space of the bloody warehouse.
My father screamed in pure agony as he watched his multi-million dollar collateral flutter to the floor.

The cartel leader immediately turned his heavy rifle away from my mother and aimed it directly at my father's chest.
"You lied to us about the property, Robert," the cartel boss snarled fiercely.
