Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The morning sun filtered brightly through the large bay windows of Grandma's newly restored living room.

It had been six exhausting months since the violent federal raid at the abandoned harbor warehouse.

My father had been formally sentenced to twenty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

My mother had aggressively flipped on the entire cartel to secure a reduced five-year prison sentence.

Judge Arthur Thornton’s brilliant legal team had completely cleared my name of any fraudulent financial charges.

They had also successfully reversed the forged quitclaim deed, legally returning the entire estate to Eleanor.

I sat happily at the heavy wooden dining table, enjoying a fresh cup of extremely expensive coffee.

Grandma was humming a cheerful church hymn while she watered her beautiful indoor potted plants.

"The house feels so wonderfully peaceful now," I noted with a genuine smile.

"It is amazing what removing a few toxic parasites can do for the overall atmosphere," she joked.

We were totally safe, financially secure, and finally completely free from my parents' destructive greed.

Later that afternoon, I decided to help her clean out the dusty, cluttered attic above the garage.

I found a heavy cardboard box hidden deeply behind an old, broken sewing machine.

Inside the dusty box was a stack of yellowed medical records and a fragile birth certificate.

I carefully unfolded the highly official document and read the faded, typewritten ink on the page.

The certificate clearly proved that Robert Mercer was absolutely not Eleanor’s biological son.

My cell phone suddenly vibrated aggressively in my pocket with an unknown blocked number.

I answered the call cautiously, expecting it to be another annoying telemarketer.

"Daniel, you have your real mother's beautiful eyes," a raspy, terrifyingly familiar female voice whispered.

"It is finally time for you to pay the bloody debts she left behind."
