Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

My mother pointed the barrel of the gun directly at my chest.

I held my hands up slowly and stepped carefully in front of Grandma.

"Mom, put the weapon down before you do something insane," I pleaded softly.

"Your father warned me you would try to interfere with our retirement plans," she sneered.

"Is that what you call robbing your own mother and ruining my life?" I asked angrily.

"She has been sitting on this million-dollar property for decades while we struggled to pay off credit cards," my mother justified.

Grandma peeked out from behind my shoulder with a look of pure disgust.

"You are drowning in debt because of your husband's gambling addiction," Grandma fired back.

My mother's hand trembled slightly, but her grip on the gun remained tight.

"It does not matter anymore, because the money is already safe in the Cayman Islands."

The front door suddenly swung open, and my father rushed into the living room.

He was out of breath and holding a thick stack of official legal folders.

"Helen, the police are on their way to arrest Daniel for kidnapping," my father panted.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw his wife aiming a gun at his own son.

"Put that away, you idiot," my father hissed while grabbing her wrist.

"They know everything, Robert," my mother cried in a panic.

My father shoved the gun back into her purse and turned to face me with a fake smile.

"Daniel, son, you need to listen to me very carefully," he said in a smooth, manipulative tone.

"Do not call me your son," I spat back with absolute hatred.

"I have legally binding medical declarations signed by two doctors," my father bragged.

He waved the folders in the air like a twisted trophy.

"They state that Eleanor is mentally incompetent and a danger to herself."

He took a menacing step closer to us.

"When the police arrive, they are going to take her away to a locked psychiatric ward."

"And they are going to arrest you for forcibly removing her from the nursing facility."

Sirens began wailing loudly in the distance, growing closer by the second.

"Give me the original deed, Eleanor, and I will tell the cops it was just a misunderstanding," he offered.

Grandma looked him dead in the eye and spat directly onto his expensive leather shoes.

My father raised his hand to strike her across the face.

I lunged forward and drove my fist directly into my father's jaw with everything I had.
