Chapter 7 - The Ghost

I stared at my grandmother under the flickering fluorescent light of the parking garage.

"My grandfather died in a tragic boating accident before I was even born," I argued weakly.

Grandma zipped the heavy duffel bag closed and slammed the trunk shut with a loud thud.

"Arthur was a brilliant man, but he owed money to people who do not forgive debts," she explained softly.

We climbed back into the stolen sedan and drove carefully toward the desolate harbor district.

The rain started coming down in heavy sheets, hiding our vehicle in the thick gray mist.

Pier 44 was a rotting wooden structure attached to a crumbling brick warehouse.

I parked the car behind a rusted shipping container and turned off the headlights entirely.

We sat in the suffocating silence, listening to the heavy rain pound against the metal roof.

Suddenly, a bright flashlight beam cut through the darkness and hit my driver-side window.

A massive man in a black raincoat tapped the glass with the barrel of a shotgun.

I slowly rolled the window down, keeping both of my hands clearly visible on the wheel.

"Get out of the car and walk toward the side door," the giant man ordered gruelly.

I helped Grandma out into the freezing rain, and we hurried inside the drafty building.

The warehouse was completely empty except for a single folding table and two rusty chairs.

Sitting at the table was an elderly man with sharp gray eyes and a tailored suit.

He looked exactly like the old photographs sitting on Grandma's living room mantle.

"Hello, Eleanor," Arthur said with a voice that sounded like grinding gravel.

"You have gotten old, Arthur," Grandma replied without missing a single beat.

Arthur chuckled and motioned for us to sit down in the uncomfortable metal chairs.

"Your son has truly made a massive mess of things this time," Arthur stated bluntly.

"Can you help us get Daniel's name cleared from the federal investigation?" she asked him.

Arthur pulled out a sleek tablet and tapped the glowing glass screen a few times.

"I have already erased the digital trail linking Daniel to the offshore accounts," he said proudly.

A massive wave of relief washed over my entirely exhausted body.

"Thank you," I breathed out heavily.

Arthur suddenly slammed his hand down hard on the folding table, making me jump.

"Do not thank me yet, boy," he growled angrily.

He turned the tablet around so we could see the live security feed from outside.

Five black SUVs had just surrounded my father's stolen sedan in the muddy parking lot.

"Your father placed a GPS tracker in the trunk, and he brought the cartel with him."
