Chapter 3 - The Ambush

I instructed the receptionist to escort Greg and Vanessa into the main executive boardroom.

I waited in my private office for exactly fifteen minutes to let their anxiety build.

When I finally walked into the boardroom, they were standing by the window looking at the city view.

Vanessa was wearing a bright designer dress, showing absolutely no signs of mourning for her dead niece and nephew.

Greg looked nervous, adjusting his expensive tie as he prepared his desperate sales pitch.

They turned around when they heard the heavy oak doors click shut behind me.

Vanessa dropped her expensive handbag onto the floor in sheer shock.

"Claire?" she gasped, her eyes darting around the room in utter confusion.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

I walked slowly to the head of the table and sat down in the large leather chair.

"I am the chief executive officer of Meridian Aeronautics," I replied with a calm, flat tone.

Greg's face turned completely pale as all the color drained from his cheeks.

He had assumed Daniel's company would be absorbed by a faceless corporate board.

"Claire, we had no idea," Greg stammered, stepping forward with a fake, nervous smile.

"We came here to discuss a potential manufacturing partnership that Daniel and I were negotiating."

I folded my hands on the table and stared directly into his lying eyes.

"Daniel rejected your proposal two months ago because your financial projections were entirely fabricated," I stated bluntly.

Vanessa gasped and turned to look at her husband in shock.

Greg swallowed hard, realizing his carefully constructed lies were falling apart.

"We just need a small advance contract to stabilize our production line," Greg begged, abandoning his pride.

"If we do not secure this deal today, we are going to lose everything."

I looked at my sister, remembering the champagne photo she posted while my children were lowered into the earth.

I could have destroyed them right then and there with a single word.

Instead, I decided to play a much more painful game.

"I might be willing to reconsider the partnership," I offered, watching their faces light up with desperate hope.

"However, I will require my forensic accounting team to have absolute, unrestricted access to your internal books."

Greg hesitated for a fraction of a second, knowing his books hid illegal cartel money.

But he was out of options, and the greed in his eyes overpowered his fear.

"Of course, Claire, you can have whatever you need," Greg agreed eagerly.

I smiled a cold, empty smile and told them my team would begin the audit on Monday morning.

They thanked me profusely and practically ran out of the building.

An hour later, Marcus walked into my office with a thick printed dossier.

"I found something you need to see regarding Greg's initial loan structure," Marcus said gravely.

He slid a highlighted banking document across my desk.

"Greg did not qualify for those massive loans on his own," Marcus explained.

"Your parents signed as the primary guarantors, using their entire estate and retirement funds as collateral."

I stared at the signatures of my mother and father at the bottom of the page.

If I destroyed Greg's company, my parents would instantly lose everything they owned.
