Chapter 2 - The New CEO

The next morning, I dressed in a sharp black tailored suit and pulled my hair into a tight bun.
I walked into the towering glass headquarters of Meridian Aeronautics for the first time in five years.
The security guards immediately recognized me and escorted me to the top floor.
The executive board was already seated in the main conference room, whispering nervously among themselves.
They fell completely silent when I pushed the heavy oak doors open.
The chief financial officer stood up and offered his superficial condolences for my loss.
He quickly transitioned to suggesting that I sell my shares to the board so I could focus on healing.
I placed my leather briefcase on the grand mahogany table and took my seat at the head of the room.
"I am not selling a single share of this company," I announced with a voice that echoed off the glass walls.
"I am assuming my position as the chief executive officer, effective immediately."
A few board members shifted uncomfortably in their expensive leather chairs.
I handed out thick folders to every person at the table.
"These are the new operational directives for the upcoming fiscal quarter," I explained smoothly.
I watched their eyes widen as they realized I already understood every intricate detail of the business.
I was not a grieving, helpless widow for them to manipulate.
I was the architect who had built the very foundation of their massive wealth.
The meeting concluded with everyone pledging their absolute loyalty to my new leadership.
I returned to Daniel's massive corner office and sat behind his desk.
I immediately summoned the head of our corporate intelligence division, a ruthless man named Marcus.
Marcus had been fiercely loyal to Daniel, and he promised to serve me with the same dedication.
I handed Marcus the digital files I had discovered on Daniel's personal laptop the night before.
"I need you to dig into every single aspect of Vanguard Manufacturing," I ordered him.
Vanguard was the failing company owned by my brother-in-law, Greg.
"I want to know who his suppliers are, who he owes money to, and exactly how close he is to total bankruptcy," I continued.
Marcus nodded slowly as he scanned the preliminary investigative report on his encrypted tablet.
"This man is involved with some incredibly dangerous people, Claire," Marcus warned me.
"If the cartel finds out he is lying about his financial assets, they will kill him."
I looked out the massive window at the sprawling city skyline below.
"That is exactly what I am counting on," I replied softly.
Marcus promised to have a comprehensive dossier ready for me by the end of the week.
I spent the next three days familiarizing myself with the massive power I now wielded.
Meridian Aeronautics had the leverage to make or break hundreds of smaller supply chains across the country.
On Thursday afternoon, my private office phone rang with a call from the main reception desk.
"Mrs. Holtz, there are two people here asking for a meeting with the chief executive officer," the receptionist stated.
"They do not have an appointment, but they claim it is a matter of urgent family business."
I asked for their names, already knowing the answer in my heart.

"It is a Mr. Greg Sullivan and his wife, Vanessa," the receptionist confirmed.
They had come to Meridian to beg for the contract again, completely unaware that the new CEO was the sister they had abandoned.
