Chapter 1 - The Empty Pews

The rain fell in cold sheets against the stained glass windows of Saint Matthew Funeral Home.

I stood completely alone in the front row of the quiet sanctuary.

Three heavy wooden caskets rested silently near the main altar.

One casket held my brilliant and loving husband, Daniel.

The other two smaller caskets held my entire world, Emma and Noah.

I turned my head to look at the empty wooden pews on the right side of the center aisle.

My parents were nowhere to be found.

My younger sister, Vanessa, was absent as well.

I closed my eyes and remembered the agonizing phone call I had made just a few hours earlier.

"Today is your sister's birthday," my father had said with the calmest voice I had ever heard.

"We cannot come."

I had begged him to understand that I was burying my entire family.

He told me not to be dramatic because Vanessa only turned thirty years old once.

Then he hung up the phone on his grieving daughter.

At three o'clock that afternoon, my phone buzzed inside my black wool coat.

It was an automatic notification from a popular social media app.

Vanessa had posted a vibrant picture of herself holding a glass of expensive champagne at a rooftop restaurant.

Our parents were smiling brightly in the background of the photograph.

The caption beneath the picture read that family was absolutely everything.

I did not shed a single tear when I saw that post.

My tears had completely dried up days ago, leaving behind nothing but a cold and hollow shell.

Six days after the funeral, my mother finally decided to visit my quiet house.

She walked through my front door wearing designer sunglasses and carrying a cheap bouquet of supermarket flowers.

She looked at my pale face and told me that I looked terrible.

I stared at her in absolute disbelief.

She glanced around my living room as if the shadow of death had created an unpleasant smell.

She complained that they did not know what to do because Vanessa had expensive, nonrefundable restaurant reservations.

I reminded her calmly that my children were lying in wooden coffins.

She rolled her eyes and told me to stop being so dramatic.

Something deep inside my soul changed at that exact moment.

The change was not loud or violent.

My heart simply turned to pure ice.

My family had always treated me as the practical, reliable daughter who fixed all their problems.

They always treated Vanessa like a fragile, beautiful princess who deserved the world.

They foolishly believed that this overwhelming grief would finally make me weak.

They were entirely wrong.

Daniel had been the sole founder of Meridian Aeronautics, a highly successful private aerospace engineering company.

He had built the corporation quietly over twelve years, keeping our private life completely out of the media.

I had designed the company's original navigation software before stepping away to raise our two beautiful children.

Under Daniel's comprehensive estate plan, every single controlling share of the company had passed directly to me.

My parents had no idea that I had just inherited a corporate empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

They also did not know that two months before the tragic accident, Vanessa's husband had approached my husband for a massive favor.

Greg owned a failing manufacturing business that was on the verge of total bankruptcy.

I knew this because Daniel always shared every business proposal with me.

Daniel had firmly rejected Greg's desperate proposal because the submitted financial records looked highly fraudulent.

After my mother left my house, I walked into Daniel's dark home office.

I opened his secure laptop and bypassed the heavy encryption using the passwords we shared.

I searched through his recent files to find the exact rejection letter he had sent to Greg.

Instead of a letter, I found a hidden, locked folder labeled with Greg's name.

I clicked on the first digital document inside the folder.

It was a private investigative report that Daniel had commissioned to look into Greg's shady background.

The final page of the report showed that Greg owed millions of dollars to a violent criminal cartel.

My breath caught in my throat as I noticed a second file attached to the folder.

It was an audio recording of a threatening voicemail Greg had left on Daniel's private phone.

I pressed play and listened to the terrifying sound of my brother-in-law's voice filling the silent room.

"If you expose my fake financials to the authorities, Daniel, I will make sure you lose everything you love," the voice hissed.

I stared at the glowing screen as a chilling realization washed over my entire body.

May you like

My family did not just casually abandon me in my darkest hour of grief.

They were directly connected to the horrible reason my husband and children were buried in the cold ground.
