Maya was thriving. The trauma of that night had faded, replaced by the warmth, love, and safety of our new life. She had friends, she loved her new school, and her laughter filled the halls of our home every single day.

I stood on the back porch one evening, watching the sun set over the mountains. The air was crisp, but it didn't feel threatening anymore. It just felt clean.
