Chapter 5 - THE ASSET FREEZE

While my parents rotted in solitary confinement for their own protection, Marcus and I went after their empire.
Armed with the evidence of their financial conspiracy, a federal judge granted an emergency injunction. Within forty-eight hours, every single bank account, investment portfolio, and credit line tied to my parents was frozen.
Their defense attorney, realizing he wasn't going to get paid his massive retainer, dropped them as clients immediately. They were forced to use a public defender.
I received a collect call from the county jail on a Tuesday evening. It was my father.
“Sarah,” he begged, his voice cracking with desperation. “Sarah, please. The bank took the house. They locked my accounts. You have to tell the DA to drop this. We’re your parents!”
“You’re not my parents,” I answered, my voice like ice. “You are the people who threw my daughter's medicine into the snow.”
“We were stressed! We made a mistake!” he sobbed.

“You didn't make a mistake, Richard,” I said. “You made a choice. And now, you're paying the bill.”
I hung up the phone and blocked the number.
