Chapter 8 - THE VERDICT

It took the jury less than two hours to reach a decision.

The foreman stood up, a stern expression on his face.

“On the charge of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, we find the defendants guilty. On the charge of Attempted First-Degree Murder, we find the defendants guilty. On the charge of Severe Child Endangerment, we find the defendants guilty.”

My mother collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically. My father just stared blankly at the wall, a hollow shell of the arrogant man he used to be.

The judge didn't show an ounce of mercy.

“Richard and Evelyn Sterling,” the judge announced, his voice echoing off the oak walls. “Your crimes represent the most vile, unnatural betrayal of human nature. You are sentenced to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of parole.”

A cheer erupted from the gallery. I didn't cheer. I just let out a long, heavy breath. The nightmare was finally over.
