Chapter 8 - The Vault Standoff

The heavy steel vault door clanged loudly, locking us into a deadly Mexican standoff.
Matt looked incredibly smug, his tailored suit completely ruined by the events of the long day.
Mark stood nervously beside him, his hands shaking violently as he aimed his weapon at Emily.
"Hand over the ledgers right now, Emily, or I will blow your head off," Matt demanded coldly.
Emily laughed directly in his face, completely unfazed by the lethal threat.
"If you shoot me, the dead-man's switch on my server will email these ledgers directly to the FBI."
Mark lowered his gun slightly, looking desperately between Matt and his younger sister.
"I never wanted to hurt anyone, Olivia," Mark pleaded, his voice cracking with pathetic emotion.
"Mom and Dad promised they would pay off my loan sharks if I took the fall for the fake hit-and-run."
He had been used as a desperate pawn by our entire toxic, manipulative family.
Matt let out a sharp, cruel laugh that echoed violently off the metal safety deposit boxes.
"You are such a pathetic idiot, Mark."
Matt turned his weapon slightly, aiming it directly at my brother's chest.
"I was never going to let you live to see a single dime of that bribe money."
Without a fraction of a second of hesitation, Matt pulled the heavy trigger.
The suppressed gunshot sounded like a loud crack of a whip in the confined space.
Mark cried out in agonizing pain as the bullet tore through his left shoulder, sending him collapsing to the floor.
Matt quickly swung the gun back toward me, a look of pure homicidal joy in his eyes.
I didn't wait for him to fire again.
I lunged forward with explosive speed and tackled Matt violently around his waist.
We crashed heavily onto the hard marble floor, the gun skittering away into the dark corners of the vault.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of a breaching explosive violently shook the entire bank building.

The massive steel vault door was blown entirely off its reinforced hinges in a shower of sparks and smoke.
Dozens of heavily armored SWAT officers flooded into the room with laser sights cutting through the dust.
