Chapter 1 - The Horrifying Truth

"Your brother is not in the emergency room, Mrs. Wilson."

I stared at the tall officer, my mind struggling to process the sudden shift in reality.

"But my parents called me at one in the morning crying about a medical emergency."

The second officer sighed heavily and looked me directly in the eyes with profound pity.

"Mark was arrested last night at twelve-forty-five."

My stomach immediately plummeted to the cold hardwood floor of my entryway.

"Arrested for what?"

"He was arrested for a brutal hit-and-run that left a young woman clinging to life in the intensive care unit."

The morning air suddenly felt suffocatingly thin, and the air completely left my lungs.

My parents had called me exactly fifteen minutes after the accident occurred.

They didn't want twenty thousand dollars to pay for an emergency medical procedure.

They wanted twenty thousand dollars to bribe a corrupt mechanic to destroy Mark's car before the police found it.

They were entirely willing to let an innocent woman die just to save their golden boy from a prison sentence.

"I refused to give them the money," I whispered, my hands shaking violently against my sides.

"We know you refused," the taller officer replied gently, writing something in his notebook.

"We arrested your parents an hour ago for attempting to aid a fleeing felon."

I leaned against the doorframe, feeling a sick, twisted mixture of absolute betrayal and unexpected relief.

For my entire adult life, I had been treated like the family's personal ATM machine.

They had finally crossed a moral line that I could never, ever forgive.

I heard heavy footsteps coming down the carpeted stairs behind me.

My husband, Matt, walked into the entryway rubbing his tired eyes.

"Olivia, what is going on here?"

Matt placed a warm, comforting hand on my trembling shoulder.

The police officer asked Matt to officially identify himself for the formal report.

Matt provided his full name and asked the officers why they were harassing his wife.

The officer repeated the horrifying story about Mark's late-night arrest.

Matt gasped loudly and pulled me into a tight, protective embrace.

"I am so sorry, honey, your family is completely out of control," Matt whispered into my hair.

I pulled away slightly, needing to ask the officer one final, terrible question.

"Who was the victim of the hit-and-run?"

The officer flipped a page in his small notebook and looked incredibly uncomfortable.

"That is the absolute worst part of this entire tragic situation, Mrs. Wilson."

He looked up at me with deep, genuine sorrow etched across his hardened face.

"The woman your brother ran over was your younger sister, Emily."

My knees buckled instantly, and Matt had to catch me before I hit the ground.

My parents were willing to cover up the attempted murder of their own youngest daughter to protect Mark.

The officer asked if I could come down to the station to sign a formal statement.

Matt immediately volunteered to drive me so I wouldn't have to navigate the morning traffic in my condition.

I grabbed my purse and climbed into the passenger seat of Matt's car, feeling entirely numb.

As Matt started the engine, his cell phone lit up in the center console.

A text message banner flashed across his locked screen before he could snatch the phone away.

The message was from my brother Mark, and it made my blood run completely cold.

"Did you make sure she stayed distracted while I finished the job?"
