Chapter 5 - The Precinct Breakout

I stared at the small silver key resting on the cold metal table, completely paralyzed by confusion.
"What are you doing here, Sarah?"
She leaned forward, her intense green eyes scanning the small holding cell for hidden cameras.
"I have been investigating your family's finances for the past five years, ever since Mark ruined my credit."
She instructed me to quietly unlock my handcuffs while she explained her insane plan.
"I triggered a minor electrical fire in the evidence room on the second floor just before I walked in here."
Right on cue, the deafening shriek of the precinct fire alarm began echoing through the concrete walls.
Thick, acrid smoke began pouring through the overhead ventilation grates, causing immediate chaos outside.
"Unlock the cuffs and follow me exactly, or we are both going to federal prison," she commanded.
I twisted my wrists awkwardly and managed to insert the small key into the locking mechanism.
With a satisfying click, the heavy steel cuffs fell loosely away from my bruised skin.
Sarah threw the cell door open and pulled me into the frantic, smoke-filled hallway.
Officers were running in every direction, completely ignoring the two women blending into the panicked evacuation.
We slipped out through a rear maintenance exit and sprinted toward a rusted sedan parked in a dark alley.
Sarah threw the car into drive and sped away into the city traffic before anyone noticed I was missing.
"I need you to tell me exactly what you know about Matt's embezzlement," I pleaded, my heart still racing.
Sarah handed me a thick, encrypted tablet from the center console.
"Open the first file folder on the desktop."
I tapped the screen and opened a massive spreadsheet filled with complex, offshore wire transfers.
"Matt wasn't just stealing money from your legitimate business, Olivia."
She tapped a specific column of numbers that highlighted millions of dollars moving through dummy corporations.
"He was actively laundering massive amounts of cash for a highly organized international drug cartel."
The reality of the situation crashed over me like a freezing tidal wave of pure dread.
"Emily didn't blackmail him over simple embezzlement; she tried to blackmail a cartel money launderer."
Sarah nodded grimly, gripping the steering wheel as we navigated the dark, rain-slicked streets.
"Matt is incredibly dangerous, but he isn't the actual mastermind behind the laundering operation."
I looked at her, my mind completely incapable of handling another devastating betrayal.
"Who is the mastermind?"
Sarah pulled the car into a dark, abandoned warehouse district and turned off the headlights.
She scrolled down to the bottom of the financial spreadsheet and highlighted the ultimate beneficiary account.

The name on the offshore account was entirely unmistakable.
"Your sweet, suburban mother is the regional boss of the entire money laundering syndicate."
