Chapter 7 - The Master Ledgers

I stared at the dead assassin on the hospital floor, completely paralyzed by the gruesome scene.
"Emily didn't just survive an assassination attempt," Sarah whispered, kneeling to examine the body.
"She killed this man herself and completely vanished into the night."
My mind raced, trying to comprehend how my spoiled, pampered sister was capable of such brutal violence.
"She must have faked the severity of her coma to lure them into a trap," I realized aloud.
Sarah pulled a small, high-tech tracking device from her jacket pocket.
"Before she went into the hospital, I slipped a microscopic GPS tracker into the heel of her favorite boots."
She activated the tracker, and a blinking red dot appeared on the digital map screen.
"She is currently inside the First National Bank building in the downtown financial district."
We left the bloody hospital room behind and drove aggressively toward the towering skyscrapers of the city.
The bank was completely closed to the public, but the heavy glass doors had been violently smashed open.
We stepped carefully over the shattered glass and drew our flashlights, navigating the dark, cavernous lobby.
We walked down the marble staircase toward the heavily fortified underground safety deposit vault.
The massive steel vault door was wide open, casting a warm, golden light out into the dark hallway.
We crept silently to the edge of the doorway and peered inside the secure room.
Emily was standing perfectly unharmed in the center of the vault, holding a thick leather-bound notebook.
She looked absolutely nothing like a victim of a brutal hit-and-run accident.
"I knew you would eventually track me down, Sarah," Emily said, not even turning around to face us.
We stepped into the vault, and I stared at my younger sister with profound disgust.
"You faked the entire accident to steal the master ledgers for yourself," I stated, the anger boiling in my veins.
Emily finally turned around, a wicked, triumphant smile playing across her lips.
"I poured a pint of fake blood on the windshield and paid Mark to leave the car at the industrial park."
She had masterminded the entire illusion to frame our parents and steal the cartel's leverage.
"With these ledgers, I can blackmail the cartel for fifty million dollars and disappear forever."

Before Emily could take another step toward the exit, the heavy vault door began to swing shut.
Matt and Mark stepped out of the dark shadows of the hallway, aiming suppressed pistols directly at our heads.
