Chapter 6 - The Ghost's Testimony

The courtroom erupted into total chaos as the fabricated video looped on the large screens.

The judge furiously banged his gavel, threatening to clear the gallery if the shouting did not stop.

I stared at the screen, my blood boiling at the horrific desecration of my unit's sacrifice.

I knew the raw, unedited footage of that mission was stored securely at the Pentagon.

The bailiff aggressively pushed me back toward the defense table, ordering me to sit down.

Suddenly, a loud commotion broke out in the back row of the public seating area.

A man wearing a heavy trench coat pushed his way past the reporters and walked past the wooden gate.

He lowered his hood, revealing a jagged scar across his jaw and cold, dead eyes.

It was Sergeant Elias Vance, a member of my squad who was officially declared killed in action three years ago.

I gasped, completely unable to process how a dead man was standing in a civilian courtroom.

Caleb smiled warmly and called Sergeant Vance to the witness stand as a rebuttal witness.

Vance placed his hand on the Bible and swore to tell the whole truth.

He looked directly at me, his eyes completely devoid of the brotherhood we once shared.

He testified that the horrific video on the screen was entirely real and completely unedited.

He claimed that he had to fake his own death to escape my tyrannical, bloodthirsty command overseas.

The jury stared at Vance with absolute sympathy, fully believing his agonizing performance.

I realized with sickening clarity that Caleb had used the company's stolen funds to buy Vance's soul.

I stood up to cross-examine my former brother-in-arms, my voice shaking with betrayed rage.

I asked him how much Caleb had paid him to betray his country and his oath.

Vance did not flinch, calmly turning to the judge to report that I was harassing him.

The judge ordered me to stand down and immediately declared the evidentiary phase of the trial closed.

He announced that due to the severity of the new war crime allegations, my bail was officially revoked.

Two heavy-set bailiffs grabbed my arms, snapping cold steel handcuffs tightly around my wrists.

As I was dragged toward the holding cells, Caleb leaned close to my ear.

He whispered that he had sold the drone tech this morning, and I was going to hang for his treason.
