Chapter 5 - The Stolen Valor Trap

I sat entirely alone at the defense table, completely abandoned by the justice system.
Caleb slipped the flash drive into his pocket, his smug smile radiating absolute victory.
The judge granted my lawyer's withdrawal without a single moment of hesitation.
He then cruelly informed me that the trial would proceed immediately, forcing me to represent myself.
The jury watched me with expressions ranging from pity to profound disgust.
I stood up, gripping the edge of the wooden table to hide the trembling in my hands.
I requested permission to cross-examine my mother, who was still sitting in the witness box.
The judge sighed heavily, warning me that he would not tolerate any emotional outbursts.
I approached the podium, locking eyes with the woman who had given birth to me.
I decided to use the advanced psychological interrogation techniques I had mastered during my classified deployments.
I asked her rapid, contradicting questions about the timeline of my supposed fake military career.
She answered confidently at first, but soon began to stumble over the fabricated dates and locations.
I pressed harder, exposing the logical impossibilities of her sworn testimony.
The jury began to lean forward, clearly noticing the massive holes in her malicious story.
My mother's composed facade finally cracked, and she yelled that I was confusing her on purpose.
I was one question away from making her admit to the entire conspiracy on the official court record.
Caleb suddenly stood up and loudly objected, claiming he had newly discovered evidence to present.
The judge instantly sustained the objection and allowed Caleb to approach the visual monitors.
Caleb connected his laptop to the courtroom screens, claiming he had found a video on the dark web.
The screen illuminated with shaky, night-vision combat footage from a desert warzone.
It was a heavily manipulated video from the exact classified mission where I had earned my medals.
The footage had been expertly edited to make it look like I was mercilessly executing unarmed civilians instead of fighting insurgents.

The jury gasped in unison, staring at me as if I were a literal monster.
Caleb turned to the gallery and loudly declared that I was not a hero, but a vicious war criminal.
