Chapter 3 - The Shell Game

I stared at the crumpled receipt in my hand, my mind racing through tactical possibilities.
The prosecutor was apparently playing both sides of this corrupt legal war.
He had just handed me the weapon I needed to destroy the judge, but I could not authenticate it in court.
I needed direct access to the shell companies my father had warned me about on his deathbed.
I remembered my father kept a hidden server in the basement of our old corporate headquarters.
I had exactly forty minutes before the trial resumed to access that server and download the financial ledgers.
I slipped out the back exit of the courthouse and hailed a taxi to the financial district.
The Bennett Meridian building loomed over the city like a glass fortress.
My biometrics had been wiped from the front doors, so I used the maintenance tunnels to bypass security.
I crawled through the dusty ventilation shafts, relying on the stealth training my mother claimed I never had.
I dropped down into the dark, climate-controlled server room beneath the building.
The main terminal required a twelve-digit alphanumeric encryption key to unlock the master files.
My father had taught me the code years ago, disguising it as a childhood rhyme.
I typed the sequence flawlessly, and the massive screen flickered to life.
I navigated to the offshore accounts and found the exact transaction that matched the prosecutor's receipt.
But I found something far worse hiding beneath the bribery payments.
Caleb was not just stealing our family wealth to buy luxury cars and real estate.
He was actively selling the company's classified drone targeting systems to a known foreign terrorist organization.
I plugged a flash drive into the console and began downloading the treasonous evidence.
The download progress bar crawled agonizingly slowly toward completion.
Suddenly, a red warning light bathed the server room in a harsh, flashing glow.
The automated security system announced that a silent alarm had been triggered.

I pulled the flash drive free just as the heavy steel doors of the server room began to lock.
I turned around to find three heavily armed private military contractors standing in the doorway with their weapons raised.
