Chapter 4 - The Burn Notice

The three contractors wore tactical gear devoid of any identifying insignia.

They were professional ghosts, hired by Caleb to erase anyone who dug too deep into his treason.

The lead contractor demanded I drop the flash drive and place my hands behind my head.

I slowly raised my hands, pretending to surrender while calculating the distance between us.

I recognized the tactical formation they were using to secure the room.

It was the exact same breaching protocol my own special forces unit had developed overseas.

I kicked a rolling server rack directly into the nearest contractor, knocking his weapon aside.

In the same fluid motion, I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall and smashed it against the second man's helmet.

Thick white chemical foam erupted into the air, instantly blinding everyone in the tight space.

I used the chaotic smokescreen to disarm the lead contractor and sweep his legs out from under him.

I sprinted past their groaning bodies, moving purely on muscle memory and survival instinct.

I scrambled up the maintenance ladder and burst out into the crowded city streets.

I blended into the lunchtime crowd, checking over my shoulder to ensure I was not being followed.

I had the evidence of Caleb's treason burning a hole in my pocket.

I checked my watch and realized I had only five minutes to return to the courthouse before the recess ended.

I ran until my lungs burned and the scars on my ribs screamed in agony.

I slipped back into the courtroom just as the judge took his seat at the high bench.

My lawyer looked at me with furious eyes, demanding to know where I had gone.

I discreetly handed him the flash drive under the defense table, whispering that it contained proof of federal treason and judicial bribery.

I told him we needed to immediately motion for a mistrial based on criminal conspiracy.

My lawyer looked down at the small plastic drive in his sweating hands.

He nodded slowly, standing up to address the impatient judge.

Instead of declaring a mistrial, my lawyer walked directly over to Caleb's table.

May you like

He handed the flash drive directly to my brother with a polite, subservient bow.

My lawyer turned to the judge and officially requested to withdraw from my case, citing irreconcilable differences.
