Chapter 9 - The Public Confession

"Don't make a single sound, Claire," Monica whispered directly into my ear.
She had been completely hiding in the shadows, waiting for me to make my move.
She aggressively shoved the barrel of the gun harder into my lower back.
"You are going to walk quietly out the back door, or you die right here," she ordered.
I looked at the stage, watching Mr. Vance smile at the crowd of wealthy investors.
I knew that if I left this ballroom, I would absolutely never see my children again.
I made a completely reckless, desperate decision.
I violently threw my elbow backward, striking Monica squarely in her face.
The gun went off with a deafening roar, firing a bullet blindly into the high ceiling.
Absolute panic erupted in the grand ballroom as wealthy investors screamed and dove for cover.
Monica stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding nose and dropping the weapon.
I sprinted toward the stage, completely ignoring the sheer chaos around me.
I grabbed the microphone from a completely shocked Mr. Vance.
"This man is a murderer and a corporate thief!" I screamed into the microphone.
My voice echoed loudly over the massive sound system, cutting through the panic.
I pulled the forged documents and the metal lockbox out of my purse and held them high.
"He hired my neighbor to forge documents and steal my husband's patented seeds!"
Mr. Vance lunged toward me, trying to violently rip the microphone from my hands.
But several brave attendees rushed the stage and forcefully tackled him to the ground.
The massive ballroom doors flew open, and a heavily armed SWAT team swarmed the room.
Mark had completely ignored my instructions and called the state police the moment I left.
The state troopers completely bypassed the corrupt local police and took over the investigation.
They aggressively handcuffed Mr. Vance and dragged a sobbing Monica up from the floor.
An FBI agent walked up to me and gently took the forged documents from my shaking hands.
"You are completely safe now, Mrs. Thomas," the federal agent assured me softly.
I watched them drag the monsters out of the room in heavy steel chains.
The overwhelming weight of the last few days finally lifted off my tired shoulders.

I fell to my knees on the stage and wept tears of absolute, pure relief.
The entire nightmare was finally, completely over.
