Chapter 8 - The Framed Widow

The news reporter spoke with a grave, somber expression to the camera.

"Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set to destroy financial records," the reporter stated.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as a terrifying realization washed over me.

Mr. Vance and Monica were completely tying up their loose ends to protect themselves.

But the absolute worst part was yet to come on the broadcast.

The screen cut to a press conference with the corrupt local police chief.

"We have issued a statewide arrest warrant for Claire Thomas," the chief announced loudly.

"She is our prime suspect in the arson and the subsequent murder of the bank manager."

I collapsed into the kitchen chair, completely unable to breathe.

They had perfectly framed me for a horrific crime I had absolutely nothing to do with.

If I went to the FBI now, they would arrest me on the spot for murder.

"We cannot go to the authorities yet," Mark said, his voice entirely grim.

"We have to find undeniable proof of Vance's conspiracy before you turn yourself in."

I looked at the bag of miracle seeds resting on the kitchen table.

Those seeds were the absolute only leverage I had left in the world.

I opened my laptop and began desperately researching Agri-Corp's corporate structure.

I found a press release announcing their massive annual shareholder gala happening that exact night.

Mr. Vance was scheduled to give a keynote speech to hundreds of wealthy investors.

If I wanted to expose him, I had to do it publicly where he couldn't hide.

I looked at Mark with a completely renewed sense of fierce determination.

"I need you to watch the kids," I told my brother firmly.

"I am going to that gala, and I am going to burn his entire empire down."

Mark tried to argue, but he saw the absolute fire in my eyes and finally agreed.

I changed into a dark dress, hid the forged documents in my purse, and left the apartment.

I managed to sneak into the luxury hotel through the busy catering kitchen.

I blended in with the serving staff and slowly made my way toward the grand ballroom.

I stood in the shadows just as Mr. Vance walked proudly onto the brightly lit stage.

He began talking about a miraculous new agricultural breakthrough that would double their profits.

I took a deep breath and stepped completely out of the shadows.

But before I could say a single word, someone pressed a cold gun barrel against my spine.
