Chapter 1 - The Stolen Legacy

The cold morning air bit at my cheeks as I stared at the completely empty branches.

Every single apple and pear that my late husband had carefully nurtured was gone.

Broken twigs and crushed leaves covered the grass like a graveyard of his hard work.

Daniel's wooden ladder lay carelessly tossed beside the chain-link fence separating our yards.

Something dark and heavy snapped inside my chest.

I knew exactly who had done this.

The bright kitchen lights in Monica’s house were already on despite the early hour.

She thought that because I was a grieving widow, I would just cry and do nothing.

She was absolutely wrong.

Hours later, I marched into Monica’s pristine, award-winning front yard holding a heavy bucket.

I didn't scream, and I didn't knock on her door to beg for my property back.

Instead, I dumped three gallons of industrial-grade skunk repellent directly onto her expensive rose bushes.

The horrific, eye-watering stench instantly filled the entire neighborhood.

I was turning around to walk away when the toe of my boot hit something hard in her flowerbed.

I looked down and saw a corner of a rusted metal lockbox sticking out of the dirt.

Curiosity overtook my anger, and I quickly dug it out with my bare hands.

I pried the weak latch open, expecting to find gardening tools or spare keys.

Instead, I found my late husband's missing wedding ring resting on top of a signed legal document.

And the signature at the bottom of the paper transferred ownership of our entire property to Monica.
