Chapter 6 - The Standoff

Mr. Vance froze completely as the bright red sparks of the flare illuminated my face.
"If anyone takes one step closer, I will drop this flare and burn the seeds to ash," I warned.
The corporate thugs looked nervously at their boss, entirely unsure of what to do.
Monica pushed her way to the front of the group, her face twisted in absolute fury.
"She's bluffing, she wouldn't destroy her husband's legacy!" Monica shrieked.
I looked Monica dead in the eye and moved the flare an inch closer to the plastic bag.
"Try me," I whispered with absolute, chilling certainty.
Mr. Vance raised his hands in a placating gesture, clearly terrified of losing the multi-million dollar patent.
"Let's all just calm down, Claire," he said smoothly.
"We can offer you a highly lucrative contract that will secure your children's future forever."
I laughed bitterly at his pathetic attempt at manipulation.
"You forged loan documents and threatened to burn my children alive," I replied.
"There is absolutely no contract in the world that will make me trust you."
I demanded that they leave my property immediately, or the seeds would burn.
Mr. Vance ground his teeth in frustration, but he finally nodded to his men.
They slowly backed away and climbed into their heavy black van.
Monica screamed protests, but Mr. Vance grabbed her arm and dragged her away.
I watched the van speed off down the rural road until it disappeared completely.
I dropped the flare onto the driveway and stomped it out with my boot.
My hands were shaking so violently that I dropped the bag of seeds onto the porch.
I had won the battle, but I knew the war was far from over.
I rushed back inside to check on my children in the pantry.
They were huddled together, crying softly in the dark.
I hugged them tightly, promising that I would never let anyone hurt them.
But as I held them, I smelled something completely wrong in the air.
May you like
It was the sharp, unmistakable scent of natural gas.
Someone had quietly turned on the stove burners while I was outside.
