Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

Daniel stared at the tarnished silver key in the plastic bag, and all the color drained instantly from his face.

He stopped thrashing entirely, his arrogant facade crumbling into absolute, undeniable terror.

“That is a complete misunderstanding,” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking pitifully.

Evelyn, who was being dragged toward a squad car, suddenly began screaming like a feral animal.

“Don't you dare say a word to them, Daniel!” she shrieked, fighting against the female agent's grip.

Agent Vance turned his attention to the terrified matriarch and offered a cold, satisfied smile.

“We opened the old concrete septic tank behind the country house, Mrs. Mercer,” Vance announced loudly.

The entire airstrip fell completely silent as the gravity of his words hung heavily in the cold air.

“We found the skeletal remains of your first husband, Arthur Mercer, perfectly preserved in a chemical barrel.”

I gasped in shock, suddenly realizing the horrific depths of Evelyn’s endless cruelty.

Arthur Mercer had supposedly run away to Europe with a mistress over thirty years ago.

In reality, Evelyn had murdered him to seize control of his vast corporate empire and inherit his wealth.

And Daniel had helped her hide the body to secure his own extravagant, bloody inheritance.

“You are both going to rot in a federal supermax facility for the rest of your miserable lives,” Vance promised.

The agents forcefully shoved Daniel and Evelyn into separate armored transport vehicles.

As the doors slammed shut, I felt a massive, suffocating weight lift off my chest.

The nightmare was finally over, and the monsters who ruined my life were locked in cages.

Olivia walked over to me, wrapping her arms around her sister Sarah in a tight, desperate embrace.

“I will testify against all of them, Claire, I swear I will do whatever it takes,” Olivia promised through her tears.

I nodded slowly, realizing that Olivia was just another broken victim in the Mercer family's wake of destruction.

“Make sure you tell them exactly what Dr. Patel did to my baby,” I instructed softly.

Agent Vance gently guided me toward a waiting ambulance that had just arrived on the scene.

The paramedics wrapped a warm blanket around my shoulders and began tending to my broken wrist.

I looked up at the clearing night sky, the dark clouds finally parting to reveal a sea of bright stars.

I had lost everything I held dear, but I had survived the darkest, most terrifying night of my entire existence.

The FBI agent handed me a final piece of paperwork regarding the seizure of Daniel's corporate assets.

“As his legal spouse, you are now the sole controlling shareholder of Mercer Industries,” Vance noted smoothly.
