Chapter 6 - The Black Ledger

I stared at the small, black leather ledger resting in Olivia’s trembling hands.

The sheer magnitude of Daniel’s betrayal crashed over me like a suffocating wave of ice.

He had not just seized an opportunistic moment to push me down the stairs.

He had been methodically, systematically poisoning my unborn child for half a year just to collect an insurance payout.

My profound, paralyzing grief instantly transformed into a cold, unbreakable desire for absolute vengeance.

I snatched the ledger from Olivia’s hands and flipped it open on the cheap motel mattress.

The pages were filled with meticulously recorded dates, offshore wire transfers, and encrypted account numbers.

I saw payments to Detective Harris dating back three entire years, labeled as “Security Retainers.”

But it was the entry from exactly six months ago that made my blood run completely cold.

Daniel had wired two hundred thousand dollars to a shell corporation owned by Dr. Hannah Patel.

The doctor who had just held my hand and cried with me had been supplying the undetectable poison.

“They are all in on it,” I whispered, slamming the heavy leather book shut.

“Daniel bribed everyone from the precinct to the hospital board to ensure nobody would ever look closely.”

Sarah paced the small room furiously, running her hands through her messy hair.

“We cannot go to the local authorities, Harris basically owns the entire department,” Sarah stated pacing anxiously.

Olivia wiped the tears from her bruised face and looked up at me with newfound determination.

“My ex-boyfriend works as a forensic accountant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago,” Olivia suggested quietly.

“If we can get this ledger to him, he can trigger a federal RICO investigation and bypass the local cops entirely.”

It was the first glimmer of genuine hope I had felt since falling down that terrible staircase.

“Call him right now,” I ordered, sliding the burner phone across the mattress toward her.

Olivia dialed the number from memory, her hands shaking as she waited for him to pick up.

She quickly explained the situation, reading off two of the offshore routing numbers to prove she was serious.

“He said he will meet us at the regional airstrip in two hours with a federal strike team,” Olivia announced, hanging up.

We gathered our few belongings and rushed back out to Sarah’s battered green sedan.

The drive to the abandoned airstrip was tense, every passing pair of headlights making us hold our breath.

We finally pulled up to the rusted chain-link fence surrounding the dark, empty runway.

A sleek, unmarked black helicopter was already waiting on the tarmac with its rotors spinning softly.

A man in a tactical windbreaker stepped out of the chopper and waved a bright flashlight to signal us.

We ran across the wet asphalt, the powerful wind from the blades whipping my hair violently across my face.

I handed the black ledger directly to the federal agent, feeling a massive weight lift off my shoulders.

“Thank you for securing this evidence, Mrs. Mercer,” the agent said, securing the book in a metal briefcase.

He pulled back the hood of his tactical jacket, stepping directly into the bright beam of the flashlight.

My heart stopped completely as I stared into the smiling, arrogant face of Daniel Mercer.
