Chapter 2 - The Locked Doors

I sprinted toward my car with Ethan and my mother close behind me.

My mind was racing because my five-year-old twins were still at our house with the nanny.

I broke every speed limit on the highway to get back to my neighborhood.

I pulled into the driveway and saw Ryan’s sports car already parked in the garage.

He had left the restaurant through the back exit and beaten us home.

I ran up the front steps and shoved my key into the brass lock.

The key wouldn't turn, and I realized with absolute horror that he had already changed the locks.

Ethan kicked the heavy wooden door, but it was reinforced with steel and refused to budge.

I ran to the living room window and peered through the narrow gap in the curtains.

Ryan was aggressively shoving my children's clothes into a large leather suitcase.

The twins were sitting on the couch, crying and asking for their mother.

Diane was standing right beside them, clutching a thick stack of official legal documents.

She was smiling that same wicked smile she had at the dinner table.

I banged on the glass with both fists, screaming for my babies.

Ryan looked out the window, smirked at me, and pulled the curtains completely shut.

I grabbed my phone from my purse and dialed the emergency police dispatcher.

"My husband is trying to kidnap my children!" I yelled into the receiver.

The dispatcher promised that officers were already on their way to my location.

I felt a brief wave of relief, thinking the law would finally put a stop to this madness.

But when the police cruisers finally pulled up to the curb, everything went terribly wrong.

The lead officer walked past me and knocked on the front door.

Ryan opened it immediately, handing the officer the documents Diane had been holding.

The officer read the papers, turned to me, and placed his hand on his weapon.

"Ma'am, you need to step off the property immediately, or you will be arrested for violating a court order."
