Chapter 1 - The Plate of Bones
The crystal chandelier cast a harsh light over the mahogany dining table.
My husband's wealthy family was busy cutting into thick cuts of prime steak.
I looked over at my mother, who sat quietly at the very end of the table.
Diane, my arrogant mother-in-law, had just placed a small porcelain plate in front of her.
It was a plate piled high with gnawed bones and gristle straight from the kitchen trash.
"Servants eat leftovers," Diane sneered with a cruel and highly satisfied smirk.
My mother lowered her eyes as her hands trembled and the rest of the table fell completely silent.
I felt a sudden and blinding rage take over my entire body.
I grabbed Diane’s bowl of scalding hot French onion soup.
Without a single second of hesitation, I threw the entire bowl directly into Diane's face.
Diane shrieked in absolute terror as the hot broth soaked her expensive silk dress.
My husband Ryan jumped up from his chair and slapped me hard across the cheek.
"Apologize to my mother right now!" he screamed at the top of his lungs.
I tasted blood in my mouth, but I refused to back down.
I raised my hand and slapped him back with every ounce of strength I possessed.
When Ryan raised his fist to strike me again, my brother Ethan lunged across the dining room.
Ethan punched Ryan squarely across the jaw, sending him crashing violently into the China cabinet.
My mother finally stood up from her chair, her quiet dignity returning in full force.
She lifted the disgusting plate of bones and calmly dumped it directly into Diane’s lap.
"You wanted to humiliate me?" my mother said with a chilling calmness.
"Now everyone sees exactly what you truly are."
Ryan and Diane stared in stunned silence as our entire family turned our backs on them.
We walked out of the dining room with our heads held high.

"If you walk out that door, I am taking the kids, and you will never see them again!"
