Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

Ryan walked into the living room holding a bloody towel to his shattered nose.

He looked at the police officers with a calm, practiced expression of utter victimhood.

“Thank god you found her, officers, my wife is completely delusional and highly dangerous,” Ryan lied smoothly.

The lead detective stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Ryan’s chest to stop his advance.

“Your wife claims that your mother kidnapped your infant son, Mister James,” the detective said sternly.

Ryan let out a dramatic, exhausted sigh and shook his head in mock pity.

“My mother is staying at a hotel downtown, and my son is with her because Sarah tried to hurt him,” Ryan countered.

I lunged at him, but two officers caught me by the arms and held me back.

“He is lying, check the note on the changing table!” I screamed at the top of my lungs.

The detective held up the handwritten note we had found in the nursery.

Ryan’s confident facade slipped for a fraction of a second when he recognized his mother’s handwriting.

“She took him to the lake house, didn’t she?” I demanded, glaring at my husband with pure hatred.

Ryan quickly recovered, putting on his best innocent face.

“That note is a forgery, officers, my wife obviously wrote it to frame my innocent mother,” he insisted.

The detective narrowed his eyes, clearly sensing the deceptive cracks in Ryan’s polished story.

“If your mother is at a hotel, call her right now and put her on speakerphone,” the detective ordered.

Ryan pulled his phone from his pocket, his hands shaking slightly as he dialed his mother’s number.

The phone rang four times before going straight to a generic voicemail.

“She must be sleeping,” Ryan stammered, his face growing paler by the second.

The detective grabbed Ryan by the shoulders and slammed him against the living room wall.

“We are placing you under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping,” the detective barked, pulling out his handcuffs.

Ryan struggled, cursing loudly as the cold steel snapped securely around his wrists.

“You will never find them in time, the lake is too deep!” Ryan screamed at me in a manic, desperate rage.

I did not wait to hear another word of his psychotic rambling.

I grabbed the keys to the police cruiser from the detective’s hand and ran out the front door.

I was going to the lake house, and I was going to kill Linda with my bare hands if I had to.
