Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The surgical room was completely silent except for the steady, reassuring beep of my heart monitor echoing in the cold air.
I felt the heavy, numbing weight of the anesthesia completely paralyze my limbs, trapping me in a state of deep, twilight consciousness.
I could not move a single muscle, but my ears could still faintly process the sounds of the medical team preparing the surgical instruments.
The nurses quickly finished prepping my abdomen and quietly excused themselves to the scrub room to wash their hands.
I was entirely alone in the massive operating theater with the lead transplant surgeon standing silently beside my head.
I felt a profound sense of gratitude toward this faceless doctor who was about to slice my body open and save my miserable life.
The surgeon slowly leaned down over my face, blocking out the blinding white light of the massive surgical lamps.
I forced my heavy eyelids open just a fraction of an inch, wanting to see the face of the hero who was delivering my miracle.
The surgeon reached up with a gloved hand and slowly pulled down the blue surgical mask covering their face.
It was my mother, Evelyn, wearing a stolen doctor's uniform and smiling a terrifying, razor-sharp smile of absolute madness.
My heart rate violently spiked on the monitor, but my paralyzed vocal cords completely refused to produce a single scream for help.
She leaned down so close to my ear that I could feel her hot, toxic breath against my freezing skin.

"I am not here to give you a kidney, Maya," my mother whispered, gently stroking my forehead with a scalpel.
"I am here to harvest your healthy heart and liver to sell on the black market before you ever reach your thirty-fourth birthday."
