Chapter 6 - The Hearing

I pulled Lily behind my legs, shielding her from the man who had abandoned us three years ago.
David laughed softly, acting like an old friend instead of a fraud who had faked his own tragic demise.
Brenda stepped firmly between us, holding up a hand to stop David from taking another step forward.
She coldly informed him that he had no legal right to approach my child without a court-appointed mediator.
Evelyn scoffed, crossing her arms and claiming that a child belonged with her true biological family.
I refused to engage in a screaming match in the hallway, so I simply walked past them into the courtroom.
The judge, a stern older man named Harrison, banged his gavel to bring the chaotic room to order.
Evelyn's expensive lawyer stood up first, painting a tragic picture of a grandmother desperately trying to save her grandchild from an unstable mother.
He submitted the forged psychiatric evaluation signed by David, claiming it proved I was a danger to myself and others.
He then dramatically introduced David Vance to the court, claiming the father had miraculously survived his accident and returned to protect his daughter.
The judge looked skeptical, peering over his reading glasses at the completely absurd narrative being spun.
Brenda slowly stood up from her chair, holding a thick manila folder filled with our undeniable evidence.
She did not start by defending my character; she started by completely destroying theirs.
She handed the judge a copy of the police report detailing Melissa's arrest for planting narcotics in my home.
She then played the nanny camera footage on the courtroom monitor, showing Evelyn physically assaulting Lily.
Evelyn's face turned ash gray as the judge watched her slap a five-year-old child in high definition.
Brenda then turned her attention to David, handing the judge a certified document from the federal life insurance commission.
She proved that David had knowingly committed insurance fraud and had been living comfortably under an alias in Mexico.
She argued that David only resurfaced because Evelyn offered him a cut of Lily's trust fund to help her steal custody.
David stood up, his face red with anger, shouting that Brenda was a liar and he loved his daughter.
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out an official laboratory envelope with a broken seal.
He triumphantly slammed it onto the defendant's table, claiming it was the ultimate proof that I was a deceitful manipulator.
He announced to the entire courtroom that he had secretly taken a DNA test using a hair sample he stole from Lily's brush during his visit.

David pointed a shaking finger at me and declared that the test proved he was not actually Lily's biological father.
He thought this revelation would humiliate me and prove I lacked the moral character to raise a child.
