Chapter 3 - The Contraband

I stared at the caseworker in absolute disbelief, feeling the floor drop out from underneath my feet.
I calmly but firmly told her that there were no drugs in my home and I was the victim of a targeted harassment campaign.
Sarah looked sympathetic but stated that her hands were tied by strict departmental policies regarding narcotics allegations.
She signaled for the police officer to step inside the house to conduct a preliminary search of the premises.
I stood in the hallway, holding Lily tightly against my side as the officer began opening cabinets and closets.
I knew I was completely innocent, so I had nothing to hide from his flashlight.
He searched the kitchen, the living room, and my bedroom, finding absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.
He finally walked into Lily's bedroom, scanning the walls covered in bright pink butterfly decals.
He knelt down and opened her white wooden toy chest, shifting a few stuffed animals around.
My heart stopped when he suddenly pulled out a small, clear plastic bag filled with a suspicious white powder.
He held it up to the light, his facial expression hardening into a look of professional disgust.
Sarah gasped and immediately stepped between me and my daughter, telling Lily to come with her.
I pleaded with the officer, swearing on my life that I had never seen that bag before in my entire life.
He pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his belt and told me to place my hands behind my back.
I realized with terrifying clarity that Evelyn and Melissa had used the police visit earlier today as a distraction.
While my mother was busy yelling at me in the living room, Melissa must have slipped into Lily's room to plant the fake drugs.
They had orchestrated this entire nightmare to frame me for a felony and steal my child.
The officer grabbed my wrist, preparing to read me my Miranda rights in front of my sobbing daughter.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, forcing my panic down so my brain could actually function.
I remembered the security system upgrade I had purchased last Christmas after a series of neighborhood burglaries.
I looked at the officer and respectfully asked him to look at the ceiling corner directly above the toy chest.
He paused, his eyes following my gaze to the tiny, blinking red light of a motion-activated security dome.
I told him that the camera recorded directly to a secure cloud server that nobody in my family knew existed.
I asked him to give me exactly two minutes on my phone to prove who really brought that bag into the house.
The officer hesitated for a moment before slowly loosening his grip on my wrist.
May you like
He warned me that if I made any sudden movements, he would arrest me for resisting.
I pulled out my phone and quickly navigated to the bedroom camera feed from earlier that afternoon.
