Chapter 5 - The Forgery

The county court database displayed an emergency custody petition filed by Evelyn Harper just three hours ago.
The document claimed I was suffering from severe psychiatric episodes and was completely unfit to care for a minor.
To support this outrageous claim, Evelyn had attached a sworn affidavit from a supposedly licensed medical professional.
I clicked on the attached PDF document to read the signature at the bottom of the page.
The signature belonged to Dr. David Vance, a man who was allegedly my current attending psychiatrist.
The problem was that David Vance was not a psychiatrist at all.
David Vance was my abusive ex-husband and Lily's biological father.
He had supposedly died in a tragic boating accident in South America three years ago, leaving me with massive amounts of his unpaid debt.
I stared at the glowing screen, my hands trembling violently as I realized the horrifying truth.
David had faked his own death to escape his creditors and avoid paying years of accumulated child support.
Evelyn must have discovered he was still alive and tracked him down to orchestrate this massive conspiracy.
They needed legal custody of Lily to gain control over the life insurance trust fund I had established for her after David's alleged death.
It was a million-dollar policy, and Evelyn was currently drowning in secret gambling debts she had successfully hidden from the family.
I closed my laptop and immediately called the fierce family lawyer I had spoken to earlier that afternoon.
I explained the entire twisted situation, including the forged documents, the planted drugs, and the resurrection of my dead ex-husband.
My lawyer, a ruthless woman named Brenda, told me to pack a bag and take Lily to a secure hotel immediately.
She warned me that Evelyn and David might try to physically take Lily before the court could intervene.
I woke Lily up gently, telling her we were going on a surprise midnight adventure to a fancy hotel with room service.
We packed our suitcases and slipped out the back door, avoiding the main roads just in case Evelyn was watching the house.
We checked into a high-security hotel downtown under an assumed name that Brenda had arranged for us.
I barely slept that night, staring at the locked hotel door and listening to the rhythmic breathing of my daughter.
The next morning, Brenda called to inform me that the judge had scheduled an emergency hearing for noon.
She told me to wear my best suit, keep my emotions completely in check, and let her do all the talking.
I walked into the massive county courthouse holding Lily's hand, projecting a confidence I absolutely did not feel.
As we approached the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom, I saw Evelyn standing in the hallway dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

Standing right beside her, wearing a sharp designer suit and a confident smile, was the man I had buried a completely empty casket for.
David stepped forward, looked down at Lily, and said he was finally ready to be a real father.
