Chapter 4 - The Arrest

The police officer and the child services caseworker leaned in close to look at my glowing phone screen.

The video clearly showed my sister Melissa sneaking into Lily's bedroom while the first set of police officers were in the living room.

She looked around nervously before pulling the small plastic bag of white powder from her designer purse.

The high-definition camera caught her smiling maliciously as she shoved the bag deep beneath Lily's stuffed animals.

The officer let out a long breath, stepping back and speaking into his shoulder radio to request immediate backup.

Sarah Jenkins covered her mouth in horror, realizing how close she had come to traumatizing an innocent child.

She apologized profusely to me, stating she would personally document the malicious framing in her official state report.

I hugged Lily tightly, whispering in her ear that the scary part was finally over and she was perfectly safe.

Two more police cruisers arrived at my house within five minutes, their red and blue lights flashing brightly in the dark window.

The officer who had searched the room walked out the front door and marched straight toward Melissa's parked car.

Melissa rolled down her window with a confident smirk, likely expecting to see me being led out in handcuffs.

Instead, the officer ordered her to step out of the vehicle and place her hands on the roof.

She began to scream in confusion as he violently pulled her arms behind her back and clicked the metal cuffs into place.

I stood on my porch holding Lily's hand, watching silently as my sister threw a massive temper tantrum in the street.

She shrieked that they were arresting the wrong person and that I was the one hoarding illegal drugs.

The officer calmly informed her that they had crystal-clear video evidence of her planting the narcotics.

Melissa's face turned completely white, realizing that her flawless plan had just shattered into a million pieces.

As the officer pushed her toward the back of the cruiser, she desperately tried to deflect the blame.

She screamed at the top of her lungs that this was not her idea and that Evelyn had forced her to do it.

She yelled that our mother was terrified because of a massive financial secret I apparently did not know about.

Melissa confessed that Evelyn had already filed an emergency petition for permanent grandparent custody using forged medical documents.

I felt a cold chill run down my spine as I processed the gravity of her panicked confession.

They were not just trying to teach me a lesson or assert their dominance over my parenting style.

My mother was desperately trying to take control of my child for a reason I had not yet uncovered.

I watched the police car drive away, knowing that Evelyn would be coming for me next.

I locked the door, kissed Lily goodnight, and immediately opened my laptop to check my mother's public court filings.

What I found in the digital legal database made my blood run absolutely cold.
