Chapter 9 - The Final Code

I stared at the woman who had just coldly executed two corrupt police officers without a moment of hesitation.

Grace's hands were not shaking, and her eyes were completely devoid of the terror she had displayed earlier tonight.

She walked over to me and pulled a sharp combat knife from her boot to cut my zip-ties.

Where did you learn to shoot like that? I demanded, rubbing my bleeding wrists.

Grace ignored the question and violently tore the stuffed teddy bear completely in half.

A small, metallic flash drive dropped onto the concrete pier with a soft clink.

This is the real ledger, Grace stated, picking up the device.

Elena gave it to me two years ago, right before she staged the car crash to disappear.

She told me that if anything ever happened to her, I was supposed to trade this drive to Silas in exchange for my own freedom.

I looked at her, the horrific pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place.

You were never just a terrified pediatric nurse.

You were Elena's insurance policy.

Grace smiled, but it was a bitter, deeply sorrowful expression.

Elena saved my life a long time ago, Julian.

I owed her a debt, and I promised I would keep Amara safe no matter what happened.

I frowned, the mention of the little girl confusing me.

Where are Amara and Isabella?

Grace pointed toward a massive cargo ship that was currently preparing to leave the docks.

Isabella smuggled us onto that freighter while the police were busy arresting you.

That ship is bound for international waters, entirely out of the Syndicate's reach.

Grace handed me the metallic flash drive.

You need to take this ledger and broadcast it to every major news outlet in the world.

Once the corruption is exposed, Silas and his entire empire will crumble into dust.

I looked at the drive, realizing that this small piece of metal was the key to avenging my dead wife.

I will make sure Silas burns for what he did to her.

Suddenly, a massive spotlight illuminated the entire pier, blinding us instantly.

Well, this is certainly a touching moment, Silas's voice echoed through a powerful megaphone.

Dozens of Syndicate mercenaries stepped out from behind the shipping containers, completely surrounding us.

Silas walked forward, leaning heavily on his silver cane.

I am afraid that ship is not going anywhere, Julian.

I have placed enough C4 explosives on the hull to send it straight to the bottom of the ocean.

He smiled wickedly, holding up a small electronic detonator.

Hand over the ledger, or I will blow your sister and that little girl to pieces.
