Chapter 6 - The Federal Fortress

I stared at the glowing screen of the digital tablet, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.
If Elena handed that ledger over to the federal authorities, she was signing her own death warrant.
The Syndicate had agents buried deep within every single level of law enforcement.
We have to go to the federal building right now, I demanded.
Isabella aggressively swerved the heavy SUV around a slow-moving delivery truck.
That building is a heavily fortified fortress, Julian.
If we walk in there armed, the FBI will gun us down before we even reach the lobby.
I did not care about the risks.
My wife was alive, and she was in imminent danger of being assassinated by corrupt agents.
Drive the car, Isabella, or I will put a bullet in your leg and drive it myself.
Isabella glared at me, but she aggressively turned the steering wheel toward the downtown district.
Grace sat completely frozen in the back seat, holding her hands over Amara's ears to block out the shouting.
We parked the SUV in a dark alley two blocks away from the massive federal headquarters.
The building was surrounded by concrete barricades and heavily armed tactical police units.
I pulled a burner phone from my pocket and dialed a number I had not used in three years.
It was the direct line of Special Agent Harris, a man I had bribed countless times to look the other way.
Harris answered on the second ring, his voice completely devoid of any warmth.
You are a very wanted man tonight, Julian.
I ignored the threat and cut straight to the point.
I know Elena is in your custody, Harris.
Harris let out a dry, humorless laugh.
She was in our custody for exactly five minutes before she demanded to speak to the Director.
She is currently being transferred to an off-site black site via an armored convoy.
A terrifying realization suddenly washed over me.
Harris, the Director of the FBI is on the Syndicate's payroll.
The line went completely silent for a moment.
Then, a massive explosion illuminated the night sky three blocks away from our position.
The ground shook violently, shattering the windows of the storefronts around us.
May you like
They are not transferring her, Julian, Harris whispered before the line went dead.
They are executing her in the streets.
