Chapter 3 - The Blood in the Tunnels

Marcus stared at me with completely dead eyes, his finger tightening on the trigger.
I had trusted this man with my life for over eight years.
He knew every single security protocol and blind spot in this entire mansion.
That was exactly how the Syndicate mercenaries had breached the front gates so easily.
I did not have time to negotiate with a traitor.
I dove sideways just as Marcus fired a burst of automatic gunfire that shredded the wall behind me.
While I was still in the air, I raised my pistol and fired a single, perfect shot.
The bullet struck Marcus directly in the center of his forehead.
He collapsed to the marble floor like a puppet with its strings suddenly cut.
I scrambled to my feet and rushed toward the hidden panel behind the fireplace.
Grace was shielding Amara on the floor, shaking uncontrollably amid the chaos.
Get up and follow me if you want your daughter to live.
I punched the emergency code into the keypad, and the heavy steel door hissed open.
We hurried down the dark, spiraling concrete staircase into the subterranean tunnels.
The sounds of brutal combat echoed faintly from the mansion above us.
My remaining loyal guards were being systematically slaughtered.
We ran blindly through the damp, narrow passageway for nearly twenty minutes.
Amara began to cry softly, terrified by the darkness and the booming noises.
I finally reached the heavy iron door that led to an abandoned subway maintenance access.
I kicked the door open, expecting to find the secret getaway vehicle I had stashed there years ago.
The black armored SUV was parked exactly where I had left it.
But standing casually in front of the vehicle were five armed men in pristine white suits.
They were not typical mercenaries.
They were the elite cleaners of the Syndicate.

And the man leading them was slowly clapping his hands together.
It is truly a shame to see a king fleeing his own castle like a rat in the sewers.
