Chapter 8 - The Desperate Surrender

I sat in the burning wreckage, holding the lifeless body of my wife in my arms.
The flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers illuminated the smoke-filled street like a nightmare.
I knew that at least half of the officers aiming their weapons at me were secretly working for Silas.
If I surrendered, I would be quietly murdered in a holding cell before morning.
But if I fought back, they would tear me to pieces in a hail of completely justified police gunfire.
I gently laid Elena's body down on the metal floorboard and kissed her forehead one last time.
I dropped my empty pistol out of the ruined doorway of the transport vehicle.
I slowly raised my hands and stepped out into the freezing night air.
Get on the ground right now! a SWAT commander screamed through a megaphone.
I fell to my knees and laced my fingers behind my head.
Four heavily armored officers rushed forward and slammed me brutally into the asphalt.
They secured my wrists with heavy steel zip-ties that cut deeply into my skin.
As they dragged me toward a waiting armored police cruiser, I frantically scanned the dark rooftops.
Isabella was gone, likely retreating when the massive police presence arrived to avoid capture.
They threw me into the back of the cruiser and slammed the heavy door shut.
The police vehicle did not drive toward the central precinct building.
Instead, the driver turned the steering wheel and headed toward the abandoned industrial district near the docks.
I knew exactly what this meant.
This was not a formal arrest.
This was a Syndicate execution run.
The cruiser pulled into a dark, deserted shipping yard and parked near the edge of the freezing water.
The two officers in the front seat stepped out and opened the back door.
They grabbed me by the shoulders and dragged me toward the edge of the concrete pier.
One of the officers pulled a suppressed pistol from his duty belt and aimed it at the back of my head.
Silas sends his regards, the corrupt cop whispered coldly.
Before he could pull the trigger, the officer's head violently jerked forward.
A silenced bullet had just entered the back of his skull.
He collapsed into the dark water with a heavy splash.
The second officer panicked and raised his weapon, but a second shot dropped him instantly.

A figure emerged from the shadows of a rusted shipping container, lowering a smoking pistol.
It was Grace, and she was holding Amara's stuffed teddy bear in her left hand.
