Chapter 8 - The Hostage in the Cellar

I threw my hands up to shield my eyes from the blinding glare of the heavy tactical flashlight.

The man lowered the beam slightly, revealing the battered, bruised face of the federal agent who had arrested me in the courtroom.

He lowered the shotgun, explaining that he had been secretly tracking Richard’s criminal syndicate for over five years.

The agent had staged my dramatic arrest to safely remove me from the courtroom before Richard’s snipers could assassinate me.

He had followed the GPS tracker hidden inside Marcus's vehicle to find this isolated, heavily fortified estate.

I told him Richard was coming down the tunnel right now and that we needed to ambush him immediately.

The agent tossed me a spare pistol, ordering me to hide behind the massive oak wine racks.

We plunged the cellar into absolute darkness, waiting in terrified silence as Richard’s footsteps grew louder.

The secret brick door creaked open, and Richard stepped slowly into the wine cellar with his revolver drawn.

He called out my name, his voice dripping with a sickening, mocking sweetness that made my skin crawl.

The federal agent stepped out of the shadows, aiming his shotgun directly at Richard's chest and ordering him to drop the weapon.

Richard froze, a dark, sinister smile creeping slowly across his handsome, aristocratic face.

He did not drop the gun; instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a live thermal detonator.

He declared that if he could not walk away with my family's legacy, no one would survive the night.

He pressed his thumb firmly against the dead-man's switch, holding our absolute destruction in the palm of his hand.

I stepped out from behind the wine rack, aiming my trembling pistol directly at my husband's head.

I told him I was no longer the helpless victim he had tortured for the past five years.

Richard laughed, a cold, empty sound, and slowly removed his thumb from the detonator switch.
