Chapter 3 - The Inside Man

I stared at the loaded weapon on the cot, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

I asked Marcus why he was offering to help me escape when he had always been Richard's most loyal enforcer.

Marcus leaned against the cold concrete wall and revealed a truth that made my blood run cold.

He was never loyal to Richard; he was an undercover informant planted by a rival syndicate to dismantle my husband's empire from the inside.

But Richard had discovered his true identity earlier that morning and had already dispatched a heavily armed hit squad to kill him.

Marcus explained that Richard had paid the federal judge to ensure I was sent to this specific, isolated holding facility.

I was not meant to survive the night in this concrete cell.

The guards had been bought off, and a team of professional assassins was currently breaching the building's perimeter.

If we did not leave right now, we would both be executed long before sunrise.

I grabbed the silver pistol, my hands shaking as I felt the heavy, deadly weight of the metal.

Marcus disabled the cell block's security cameras using a small encrypted tablet.

We crept through the silent, dimly lit corridors of the detention center, carefully avoiding the regular patrol routes.

We reached the underground loading dock just as a heavily armored black van smashed through the exterior steel gate.

Four men in tactical gear poured out of the vehicle, sweeping the area with laser-sighted assault rifles.

Marcus pushed me behind a stack of wooden shipping crates, quietly drawing his own weapon.

He whispered that we had to fight our way to his getaway car parked three blocks away.

Before he could fire a single shot, the back doors of the armored van swung wide open.

Stepping out into the harsh fluorescent light was Chloe, still wearing my grandmother's antique necklace, holding a detonator in her hand.
