Chapter 9 - The Hostage

The entire courtroom instantly froze in absolute, breathless terror.
The federal tactical agents kept their weapons raised, but nobody dared to pull the trigger.
"If anyone takes a single step closer, I will kill him!" Barrett screamed, his eyes completely unhinged.
Wyatt was trembling violently, tears streaming down his small, pale face.
"Daddy, please stop, you're hurting me," Wyatt cried softly.
Barrett aggressively tightened his grip on my son's collar, entirely devoid of any fatherly love.
"We are walking out of the back exit, and if I see a single helicopter, the boy dies," Barrett demanded wildly.
I could not hide in the dark observation booth for a single second longer.
I pushed open the hidden access door and stepped directly out behind the judge's bench.
I walked slowly down the wooden steps, staring my husband down with absolute, icy fearlessness.
"You are not taking my son anywhere, Barrett," I said in a completely calm, deadly voice.
Barrett laughed hysterically, pressing the ceramic blade just a millimeter closer to Wyatt's skin.
"You have absolutely no power here, Loretta," he sneered.
I completely ignored him and locked my eyes directly onto my terrified son.
"Wyatt, honey," I said gently, keeping my voice incredibly steady.
"Do you remember the secret game we practice for emergencies?"
Wyatt blinked through his tears and slowly nodded his head.
"Execute protocol blue," I ordered firmly.
Wyatt instantly allowed all of his muscles to go completely limp, dropping his entire body weight like a stone.

As he violently dropped toward the floor, Wyatt turned his head and aggressively bit down hard on Barrett's bare hand.
Barrett screamed in sudden pain and dropped the ceramic knife onto the wooden floor.
