Chapter 4 - The Dead Phone

I stood in the empty courthouse hallway, completely frozen in terror.

"What have you done to him, Douglas?" I demanded, my hands shaking violently.

"We merely bought his permanent silence and his immediate early retirement to a very sunny island," Douglas replied before ending the call.

I realized my entire life had been systematically and brilliantly hijacked by the man I married.

I slowly lowered my phone, desperately trying to think of a way out of this nightmare.

I walked toward the water fountain and spotted Paige Delancy standing alone in an empty alcove.

She was reapplying her expensive red lipstick, looking incredibly pleased with herself.

I marched directly up to her and backed her against the marble wall.

"You are going to burn in hell for staging those photos in my children's bedroom," I whispered fiercely.

Paige just laughed in my face, showing zero remorse.

"We bought the doctor, we bought the notary, and we easily bought the CPS supervisor," Paige arrogantly bragged.

She leaned in close to my face, smelling of expensive perfume and pure malice.

"You are going to lose your company, your money, and your precious little boys today, Loretta."

She did not realize I had quietly pressed the record button on my cell phone inside my jacket pocket.

I turned away from her and ran back into the courtroom with my undeniable proof.

"Your Honor, I have audio evidence of Ms. Delancy confessing to bribing federal officials!" I announced triumphantly.

I pulled my phone out to play the damning recording for the entire room.

I tapped the screen, but it was completely unresponsive.

The screen suddenly flashed red, displaying a remote factory reset warning.

Barrett had secretly installed military-grade spyware on my device, and he had just wiped my phone completely clean.
