Chapter 2 - The Medical File

A young woman in a gray business suit walked nervously into the courtroom.
She took the witness stand and placed her hand flat on the Bible.
Under oath, she confidently testified that I had visited Douglas Croft’s law office just yesterday.
She swore she watched me sign away every single share of my family’s billion-dollar company.
I felt the entire room begin to spin around me.
"She is lying!" I shouted, unable to control my rising panic.
Judge Lawson banged her wooden gavel sharply against the sounding block.
"Order in my courtroom, Mrs. O'Connell, or I will hold you in contempt."
Barrett looked at the judge with an expression of deep, manufactured pity.
"Your Honor, my wife has been suffering from severe cognitive decline and early-onset dementia for the past year," Barrett lied smoothly.
Paige Delancy eagerly stood up and handed a thick medical file to the bailiff.
"We have the official psychiatric records from her private physician," Paige added with a sickeningly sweet voice.
The judge opened the medical file and frowned deeply at the contents.
I realized in that exact moment why I had been feeling so incredibly dizzy and forgetful over the past six months.
Barrett had been secretly slipping dangerous sedatives into my morning coffee every single day.
Judge Lawson looked at me with genuine concern and profound pity.
"Given this medical evidence, I am temporarily granting Mr. O'Connell full executive control of the assets pending an independent psychiatric evaluation."
My heart shattered into a million pieces as Barrett smirked at me.
Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom burst open violently.

Four armed police officers marched down the aisle, escorting two agents from Child Protective Services.
"We have an emergency removal order for Wyatt and Emmett O'Connell," the lead agent announced loudly.
