Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

I stared at the name on the flight manifest in complete and utter shock.
My husband had stolen our life savings to start a new life with his secret mistress.
He allowed his mother to poison our baby so I would be too distracted by grief to notice his escape.
I picked up the hospital telephone and dialed the private number of my former boss, Marcus.
Marcus was a ruthless corporate attorney who treated me like his own daughter during my time at the firm.
I quickly explained the entire situation to him over the phone.
Marcus promised he would arrive at the hospital within twenty minutes with his legal team.
I walked back out to the neonatal intensive care unit to check on Ethan.
The nurses smiled and told me that he was breathing completely on his own without the ventilator.
I cried tears of genuine joy as I reached through the incubator to stroke his warm, pink cheek.
I promised my little boy that I was going to destroy the monsters who hurt him.
Marcus arrived shortly after, carrying a fresh change of clothes for me and his encrypted laptop.
We sat in the waiting room and began formulating a plan to trap David legally and financially.
Suddenly, the heavy doors of the waiting room swung violently open.
A stern woman wearing a sharp business suit marched inside, flanked by two armed police officers.
She flashed a badge and introduced herself as an agent from Child Protective Services.
She held up an emergency court order bearing a judge's signature.

She announced that she was taking immediate, permanent state custody of my son.
David had filed a police report before his flight, claiming I was suffering from postpartum psychosis and trying to drown the baby.
