Chapter 2 - The Desperate Breach

I stared at the locked basement door in sheer disbelief.

My own husband had deliberately trapped me underground with a dying infant.

I screamed into the satellite phone, begging the dispatcher to send an ambulance and a fire rescue team immediately.

I explained that my baby was turning blue and we were locked inside a windowless basement.

The dispatcher assured me that help was already speeding toward my location.

I sat down on the cold concrete floor and unwrapped Ethan from his heavy blankets.

His tiny lips were entirely blue, and his chest had completely stopped moving.

Panic threatened to consume my mind, but my professional training forced me to remain focused.

I placed two fingers on his tiny chest and began performing infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

I counted the compressions out loud while tears streamed continuously down my face.

I begged Ethan to hold on and promised him that mommy was not going to let him die.

The sound of blaring sirens finally pierced through the quiet suburban neighborhood.

Heavy boots stomped aggressively across my living room floor upstairs.

I screamed as loud as my lungs would allow to guide them toward the basement door.

A firefighter used a heavy steel axe to completely shatter the wooden door and the deadbolt.

Paramedics rushed down the wooden stairs and immediately took Ethan from my arms.

They placed a tiny oxygen mask over his face and sprinted back up toward the waiting ambulance.

I stumbled up the stairs behind them, completely ignoring the fresh blood seeping through my hospital gown.

I climbed into the back of the ambulance just as the driver hit the gas pedal.

A veteran paramedic flashed a bright medical light into Ethan's unresponsive eyes.

He looked up at me with a deeply disturbing expression on his face.

He asked me exactly what kind of heavy sedatives I had fed to my newborn baby.
