Chapter 1 - The Hidden Lifeline

The sound of the front door closing echoed like a heavy gunshot in the silent house.

I stood completely frozen on the hardwood floor with Ethan pressed tightly against my chest.

His breathing was so shallow that it terrified me to the core of my soul.

I needed to get my three-day-old son to a hospital immediately.

David and Theresa had taken my cell phone and my credit card to ensure I remained helpless.

They thought a postpartum mother recovering from major surgery would simply go to sleep and obey them.

They had severely underestimated my will to keep my child alive.

I ignored the burning pain in my abdominal incision and hurried toward the kitchen.

We still had an old landline phone mounted on the wall near the pantry.

I grabbed the receiver with trembling hands and pressed it against my ear.

There was absolutely no dial tone.

I followed the cord down to the baseboard and felt a sickening wave of anger wash over me.

Theresa had used a pair of kitchen scissors to snip the telephone wire cleanly in half.

She had intentionally cut off my only connection to emergency services.

My legs felt weak, but I refused to let myself collapse onto the floor.

I remembered the emergency forensic go-bag I had packed years ago for my corporate investigations.

It was hidden in a locked trunk down in the basement.

I carefully cradled Ethan in one arm and gripped the wooden handrail tightly with the other.

Every step down the steep basement stairs sent a fresh wave of agony radiating through my stitches.

I reached the bottom and desperately dragged the heavy trunk out from the shadows.

I punched in the combination lock and threw the lid open.

Inside sat a fully charged satellite burner phone that could bypass any standard network block.

I dialed 911 and waited for the dispatcher to answer the call.

A calm voice finally asked for my emergency and my current location.

I turned around to head back upstairs while giving the dispatcher my home address.

That was when I saw something that made my blood run completely cold.

The heavy wooden door at the top of the basement stairs had been firmly shut.

I heard the distinct, metallic click of the exterior deadbolt sliding into place.

David had locked us in the basement before he left for the airport.
