Chapter 8 - The Rescue Mission.

My heart completely stopped in my chest.
Jessica was at the safe house, and she was dangerously armed.
I hung up the phone and sprinted toward my car, parked two blocks away from the burning house.
I drove like an absolute maniac, ignoring every red light and stop sign in the city.
I dialed Victor's private number, praying the crime boss was still awake.
He answered on the second ring, his voice calm and dangerous.
"Your wife is at the safe house trying to kill my daughter," I screamed into the phone.
"I am sending you the address right now, so please meet me there."
Victor did not ask any questions; he simply hung up to mobilize his men.
I reached the gated community in record time, crashing my car directly through the wooden security barrier.
I pulled up to the safe house and threw my car door open before the vehicle even completely stopped.
The front door of the house was wide open, the lock shattered by a stray bullet.
I grabbed the heavy iron tire iron from my trunk and rushed inside the dark house.
"Sophie!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the empty walls.
"Mommy!" a tiny voice cried out from the upstairs hallway.
I took the stairs two at a time, my adrenaline entirely masking the pain in my bruised body.
I reached the top landing and found Sarah bleeding from a deep cut on her forehead, slumped against the wall.
At the end of the hallway, Jessica was gripping Sophie by the arm, holding a silver pistol in her other hand.
"Let her go right now," I demanded, raising the heavy tire iron.
Jessica laughed, a manic and desperate sound that echoed in the tight space.
"Ryan promised we would start a new life together," she sneered, her eyes wide with madness.
"He told me to take the kid so we could use her as leverage against you."
Before I could take another step forward, heavy footsteps bounded up the staircase behind me.
Victor arrived, flanked by two massive, intimidating bodyguards.
He looked at his unfaithful wife with an expression of pure, concentrated hatred.
"You are a pathetic disappointment, Jessica," Victor said coldly.
Jessica panicked, aiming her pistol directly at her husband's chest.
Suddenly, another figure burst out of the shadows from the adjoining bedroom.
It was Ryan.
He had driven straight to the safe house after setting the fire, planning to rendezvous with his mistress.
But when he saw Victor standing there with his armed guards, Ryan's cowardice completely took over.
He realized the entire plan was ruined and his life was entirely over.

Ryan lunged forward, not to attack Victor or me, but to violently tackle Jessica to the ground.
He was betraying his own mistress to try and save his own pathetic life.
